Squeaking by with a birthday hi

Hello Crafty friends,

This is Sylvie @kaliscards.  For this Summer birthday card, I pulled a few sets illustrated by Shari Bresciani. Love those happy Summer vibes and cute crew.

This project is one of the 5 projects I created for the July issue of the Creative Stamping Magazine No. 150. The projects all follow the same color scheme (red, yellow, orange and turquoise).

For this project, I’m sharing a couple tips to improvise a quick border stencil and stretch the use of your dies to create a quick tiki bar.

For this project, I used a square panel 5.2″ by 5.2″ from Neenah classic solar white cardstock and I started with a bit of masking. To avoid the card to get too bulky, I like to have scene elements as a one layer card, so I decided to stamp the two palm trees, from the Pengu-tastic holiday stamp set directly onto the front panel and mask them. I stamped the palm trees on masking paper as well, fussy cut the masks and adhered them to the front panel, before ink blending the background.

For the background, I improvised a quick stencil for the sand and sea, tearing a piece of cardstock into 2 long strips. I used one of the strips to mask the sea area and then blended Ranger Distress oxide Scattered straw below it, insisting more on the top and fading it out towards the bottom. I removed my home-made stencil and placed the negative part on top of the sand. It doesn’t matter if you leave a bit of space, this will look like foam along the sea border.

I also added a strip of masking tape on the horizon line to delimit the sea between the stencil and the masking tape. I blended Ranger Distress oxide Salvaged patina and darkened the sides and top edge with Salty ocean.

I removed the stencil and moved the masking tape on the sea, just below the sky area. For the sky, I created another quick stencil from cardstock, also tearing it into two long strips and used one of them to blend the clouds with Ranger Distress ink Salty ocean. I flipped the stencil between each row, to avoid repetition of the pattern. I unmasked the palm trees and adhered the front panel to the cardbase, with liquid adhesive

Next, I stamped all the images from the Pengu-tastic holiday (penguin and hat), Underwater wonders (crab) and Paradise birds (birds, 6 leaves and pineapple) stamp sets. I also used the Hog happy day stamp set for the cake, gifts and sentiments.

I colored all images with Copic markers:
Penguin: W10, W7, W6, W4 / E42, E41, E40 / YR07, Y38, Y15
Crab: R39, R46, R35, YR07, R22 / G46, YG23, YG01
Hat: E42, E41, E40 / YR07, Y38 / G46, YG23, YG01
Gifts: E42, E41, E40 / R46, R35, R22
Cake: Y15, Y11, Y000 / YR07, Y38, Y17, E81
Leaves: BG99, G46, YG23, YG01
Palm trees: BG99, G46, YG67, YG23, YG01 / E47, E57, E35, E31
Toucan: YR27, YR07, Y38, Y17, Y15, Y11 / E42, E41, E40 / W10, W7, W5, W4, W2
Left parrot: YR27, YR07, Y38, Y17, Y21, Y15, Y11 / B24, BG05, BG01, BG000 / W7, W6, W4
Right parrot: YR27, YR07, Y38, Y17, Y15 / B24, BG05, BG01, BG000 / R39, R46, R35, R22 / G46, YG23, YG01
Pineapple: YR27, YR24, YR21, Y11

I added some highlights in the eyes of the birds and crab with a white gel pen.

I then used the coordinating dies of each set to die cut all the images (Pengu-tastic holiday, Underwater wonders, Paradise birds and Hog happy day). On the small sentiment strip, I created a wood effect with Copic markers, starting by coloring the entire panel with E41 and then adding strokes of E57, E35 and E31.

To create the Tiki bar, I used the Nested scalloped frames die set and used the second and fourth rectangle dies to die cut the shape from white cardstock. I then created a wood effect, the same way as I did for the sentiment strip.

To assemble the card, I started with the Tiki bar, adhering the leaves to the top of the rectangle with liquid adhesive. I layered the leaves to cover the entire top nicely, trimming some of the stems. I then hid the top part with the sentiment strip.

I also trimmed the penguin legs and adhered him behind the bar with liquid adhesive and glued the cake on his right wing. I added more liquid adhesive at the back of the tiki bar and penguin and adhered it to the front panel, in the middle. I adhered the long sentiment strip above, in the sky, with liquid adhesive.

I then adhered the pineapple and gifts with liquid adhesive, and used foam tape to adhere the birds and crab.

Thank you for stopping by and hope to see you next week.

Have a lovely crafty week!

Sylvie
