Adding Color with Mood Boards

HI friends!

It’s Colleen @irishrosecreations and I’m guest designing for Alex this month!  I want to share one of my top forms of inspiration for cardmaking – color mood boards! I think you’ll enjoy it!

I frequently refer to various color mood boards for inspiration in my cards. Color mood boards take the guess work out of “what colors should I use?” because the mood boards do the work for you! All you have to do is choose the color palette that inspires you! For my card today, I was inspired by the mood board below:

I’m using new release products For Her sentiments stamp and die, Nested Scallops Frame die set, Tiny Crosses Cover die, and Gorgeous Peonies stamp, die, stencil, and hot foil plate coordinating set. Click on the product to reach the Alex Syberia Designs shop! Also, I have a video of my entire cardmaking process below for those of you that want a quick tutorial!

Step one was to coordinate my color scheme using the Color Mood Board above. I noticed that the flower was various shades of yellow with green leaves, and the background in the photo was grey. I decided to frame out my card in the same manner – yellow flowers with a grey background.

I stamped the Gorgeous Peonies onto a piece of white cardstock using a medium shade of grey ink. This stamp is one large stamp (rather than separate flower stamps) and the die and foil plate are the same. That makes the process SO MUCH easier! Just stamp or hot foil, and then die cut, and you get all these beautiful flowers in two steps!

Getting back to my grey background prep, after I stamped the peonies, I ink blended over them with a lighter shade of grey. Then I trimmed the card panel down along with a larger black card panel and die cut the grey card panel with Tiny Crosses Cover die. I adhered the grey die cut panel over the larger black panel and then adhered both onto a 5.5×4.25 white card base. You can see the black peeking out from behind the tiny crosses and, if you look closely, you can see all that detail from the peonies in the grey panel!

Next, I hot foiled the peonies and leaves with gold foil, and then ink blended the shades of yellow and green using the coordinating stencil set from Gorgeous Peonies. Then I die cut them using the one piece die that coordinate with the stamp and foil plate. I stamped and die cut the Mom sentiment and placed everything over the grey card panel. I adhered one of the peonies with foam tape to add dimension.

I love how my card features all of the colors from the mood board, yet the card is unique because of the design elements! The grey is a nice subtle backdrop to those cheerful peonies!  Thanks for stopping by! The link to all supplies used is in bold print above.
